Clinical waste

Clinical waste is defined as any waste:

• which consists wholly or partly of human or aninmal tissue, blood or other body fluids, excretions, drugs or other pharmaceutical products, swabs or dressings, or syringes, needles or other sharp instruments, being waste which unless rendered safe may prove hazardous to any other person coming into contact with it;
• arising from medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical or similar practice, investigation, treatment, care teaching or research, or the collection of blood transfusion, being waste which may cause infection to any person coming into contact with it.

Waste likely to be produced in by a speacial treatments business may include syringes, tattoo needles, solid tissues and swabs and other similar materials.

The discovery of fly-tipped clinical waste will almost certainly result in the prosecution of the waste producer, even if the waste was handed over to a contractor in good faith. Given the nature of the waste, it is therefore vital for waste producers to prove that they take all reasonable steps to verify the credentials of the waste collection contractor.

Disposal of syringes

If you find a syringe or needle discarded around the borough, do not attempt to remove it yourself. Please notify the council immediately via Contact Warrington on: 01925 443322, so we can safely dispose of it as quickly as possible.
