Transfer to the secondary stage of education

The transfer of your child to the secondary stage of education is a very important step for your child.

The most important part of stating a preference of a school for your child, is to pay a visit to the ones that interest you.  Click the following link for contact details of the secondary schools in Warrington.

Questions about admissions to school are complex and are not easily answered in brief responses. If you are in any doubt about anything you read in the booklets, or in the answers to the questions below, you should seek clarification by making contact with the admissions team.

Key application deadlines for a place at a secondary school
If your child’s 11th birthday is between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010, he or she will transfer to secondary school at the beginning of the new school year in September 2010.

The move from primary to secondary education is an important time in every childs education, and you and your child are probably looking forward to it with a mixture of excitement and worry.

Our aim is to help make the move a smooth and simple one. The purpose of the booklet below is to answer the questions and concerns parents often raise about admission to secondary school and to tell you about your rights. We have also included extra information about secondary education, which you may find useful.

Under the new co-ordinated admissions legislation, all applications for a Warrington school will have to be made through the local authority (LA). The timetable for admission to secondary school, is as follows:

By 10 September 2009 - For children already in a Warrington primary school, and living in the borough of Warrington, a 'guide for parents' booklet and preference form will be sent home with your child from his/her primary school. A letter will also be posted to you at the same time. For children already in a Warrington primary school, but who live outside the Warrington borough, a booklet will be sent home with a letter reminding parents that they must make their application through their home local authority.

23 October 2009 - Closing date for returning completed preference form to LA. If you have misplaced your form please contact the admissions team on any of the numbers given at the bottom of this page. Please note any late applications will only be considered after the main allocation of places is finished. If you do not return your form, it will reduce our ability to meet the preference for schools that you express.

You may also wish to apply on-line at www.warrington.gov.uk/admissions

1 March 2010 - Allocation and refusal letter sent out to parent/carers - you should expect to receive this letter by Thursday 4 March 2010.

22 March 2010 - Closing date for receipt of secondary appeals.

May/June 2010 - Appeal hearings arranged.
