Carers assessments

As a carer you are entitled to an assessment to find out if you would benefit from services or support.  It is an opportunity for you to discuss your caring responsibilities with Warrington Borough Council and to identify if you would be eligible for services or if any other local organisations would be able to help you.

Am I eligible for an assessment?
If you give substantial or regular care to someone in their own home, you are entitled to an assessment of your own needs so that you can access services to help you continue to provide support.

Substantial means that you provide a level of care that should you be unable to do this the person you care for would be eligible for community care services from Warrington Borough Council.  Regular means that you always or nearly always meet the persons needs when it arises.

If you are a parent of a child with a disability your needs will be assessed alongside those of your child and family rather than a separate process.

The council is also able to undertake an assessment of your needs as a carer if the person you care for:

  • Is not receiving community care services in their own right
  • Has communicated that they do not wish to be assessed for community care services
  • Has communicated that they do not wish to receive services provided by the council following an assessment of their own needs

How is an assessment carried out?

A member of staff from the council will ask you questions to find out what help you might need to allow you to continue caring. This can be done either together (a joint assessment) or on your own (a separate assessment). Some of the things you might want to think about before an assessment include:

  • do you get enough sleep?
  • is your health affected by caring?
  • are you able to get out and about?
  • do you get time for yourself?
  • are you worried you might have to give up work?

Carers self assessment
Carers can also complete a basic self assessment.  Once you have filled in the self assessment, in partnership with Warrington Carers Centre we will contact you to discuss available services and we will send you information such as:

  • services you can access
  • a quarterly newsletter for carers
  • an invite to the annual carers conference
  • help to access the carers emergency card scheme and help to prepare an emergency/contingency plan for the person you care for and information on Carecall
  • how to access leisure services, such as the carers leisure card scheme which is available for unpaid carers who live in the Warrington area and are aged 18 or over
