A safer Bridge Street

Arcangel looks to make Bridge Street safer...

Over the last year or so the council has been working with the local NHS and Cheshire Police to address antisocial behaviour in the town centre.

Measures already undertaken include the establishment of a new policing unit for the town centre; introduction of a code of conduct and standards for door staff, taxi marshalling and the restriction of traffic access in the Bridge Street since August 2008.

This final scheme in particular has had a positive effect on the safety of all users.  Since its introduction in August 2008 the number of reported anti-social behaviour incidents has fallen by over 20%.  However the scheme has not addressed the problems which have continued to occur on the adjacent streets such as Academy Way and Friars Gate.

There is now a proposal by the task group to expand the traffic management scheme by:

Making Friars Gate(from Bridge Street to Barbauld Street) one way from east to west

Enhancing evening road closures on part of Rylands Street / Friars Gate / part of Academy Way and the middle section of Bridge Street between 9pm and 5am seven days a week for an 18 month period.

The plans are to be implemented this month for the trial period.

If residents or businesses wish to discuss the proposals in more detail or require any further information, please contact John Drake on 442668 or email jdrake@warrington.gov.uk.
