Performance and inspections within Children and Young People's Services
We continually monitor our services to ensure we and our partners are performing well and meeting local needs. The objectives set out in our Children and Young People’s Plan are very important to us and we track the progress we are making. Our progress is reported annually in our Children and Young People’s Plan Annual Review.
As part of our monitoring, we carry out Equality Impact Assessments to make sure that our policies and services treat Warrington’s children and young people equally and fairly.
We also encourage our partners to share case studies with us. These help to explain how services are supporting children and young people in the borough and give examples of good practice.
External inspections
Services provided to children and young people are subject to a detailed inspection programme, led by Ofsted.
In 2009/10 a number of changes to Ofsted’s inspection framework came into effect, with the introduction of annual unannounced inspections of contact, referral and assessment, and three-yearly announced inspections of safeguarding and looked after children’s services, which replaced the Joint Area Review (JAR) process.
Alongside these inspections, there are a number of specialist, focused inspections, for example of fostering, adoption and children’s homes. There is also a regular, rolling programme of inspections of schools, colleges, nurseries and childminders.
The results of these inspections, along with performance on a set of national indicators, contribute to an annual children’s services assessment.
Reports from Ofsted inspections can be found on the Ofsted website.
