The principles behind Inclusion Matters:
The Equality Act 2010
The purpose of the Act is to bring together, strengthen, and streamline 40 years of separate equalities legislation.
Positive vision
This principle aims to encourage childcare and leisure providers to actively promote inclusion and create positive, empowering opportunities for disabled children and young people.
Easy access to information
It is important that information is available in a variety of formats, which are presented clearly and in engaging ways to promote enthusiasm and a sense of empowerment.
Inclusion Matters focuses on helping parents, carers and providers to share as much information as possible about the child or young person. These discussions need to be both open and honest.
Positive attitudes
The barriers faced in welcoming a disabled child or young person into a provision are not always due to the physical environment, but often a direct result of providers’ wider views and opinions. It is important to remember that a person's worth is independent of their abilities or achievements.
Shared responsibility
Everyone involved in a disabled child or young person’s life shares a responsibility to challenge and eliminate all forms of discrimination.
How are they used?
With the help of the principles above Inclusion Matters (Warrington Borough Council programme) continues to support children, families and staff in childcare and leisure provisions in Warrington. Families and staff are able to access training and information which helps to develop their skills around inclusive practice. The principles provide a focus for training sessions and discussions which raise awareness.
The programme aimed initially at the private and voluntary sector of childcare is now becoming embedded in the work undertaken by the children's centres and children's services in general.
