Warrington's traveller coordinator is called Dave Sampson. He is responsible for developing education services for the gypsy roma traveller’s community, by promoting the positive aspects of education and the many learning opportunities available locally.
One of the council’s priorities is to break down barriers, preconceptions and myths of gypsy roma travellers within educational services and across other council services.
By working with the community, welcoming new travellers to the area and building positive relationships, Dave is working closer with families, linking them to services, such as health or specialist advice, and providing support where it is needed.
The council works with other partners to make sure that all local children and young people can be healthy, safe, happy and achieve their best. By explaining the local school system, helping children to attend their local school, and advising young people on training, work placements and other learning opportunities the traveller coordinator is helping to develop a stronger link to education, for both the children and their families.
The traveller coordinator also works within schools delivering training, support and guidance. He works with families and schools when asked, to find an education plan that would be best for the child or young person.
Additional support and guidance is available for traveller students when they transfer from primary to secondary school and further education.
