Warrington Borough Council looks after approximately 240 children who are unable to remain in the care of their parents. When a child becomes 'looked after', they become the responsibility of everyone working for the council and elected members of the council. This is known as 'corporate parenting’.
This means that all council employees, departments, and elected members must consider ‘looked after’ children and young people as if they were their own children and provide the best possible care and protection for them accordingly.
The Corporate Parenting Forum
Warrington Borough Council has a Corporate Parenting Forum to provide a specific corporate and agency focus for planning for children and young people in care. Made up of councillors and staff from the Children’s Services Directorate the Forum meets regularly to make sure that services for children and young people in care are of a high quality and that the Corporate Parenting Strategy is being upheld.
The Corporate Parenting Strategy 2011-12
The Corporate Parenting Strategy is the framework by which the council will ensure that our children and young people in care and care leavers have the same opportunities as their peers to enable them to fulfil their potential, and make a good start in adult life. The Corporate Parenting Strategy is linked to key multi agency plans and in particular Warrington’s Children and Young People’s Plan.
Information for WBC employees and partner agencies
Employees and partner agencies should find out more about corporate parenting and discuss with others what your department, service area or team can do to act as a good corporate parent and put it into action
Examine your policies, service plans and current practice to ensure the needs of looked after children are addressed and strategies in place to ensure inclusion.
