Adoption is a way of providing a new family for a child or children  who cannot be brought up by their birth family.

When a child is adopted

An Adoption Order is a legal document and means that:

  • All rights and responsibilities for the child are transferred to the new family
  • The birth parents no longer have any legal rights over the child and they are not entitled to claim the child back
  • The adopted child becomes a full member of the new family, and will take the family surname

The child will assume the same rights and privileges as a birth child, including the right of inheritance
