How to become a foster carer

1. If you are still interested in fostering after you have read the information you will need to complete an ‘expression of interest’ form and return it to the fostering team. When we receive your form a member of the team will get in touch to arrange a visit to your home,  so that we can learn more about and give you more detailed fostering information.

2. You will need to fill in forms about yourself and your family.  These give us permission to carry out detailed background checks with the Police, NSPCC, Education, employers and various other relevant agencies.  You will also need to show us proof of your identity.

3. You will need to have a medical with your own doctor.

4. You will be invited to attend a preparation course with other potential foster carers to learn more about what fostering involves.  The preparation course consists of two hour sessions, which take place once a week, in the evening over a six week period.

5. You will need to complete an application form.  This will include information about your family, marital status, employment, income, housing, health and various other aspects of your background and current circumstances.

6. You will need to provide three personal referees.  One must be a family member and the other two friends or work colleagues.  All will be interviewed and all personal references are strictly confidential.

7. Once you have completed the preparation course a social worker will complete a home study of you and your family. During the home study assessment a range of subjects will be discussed such as relationships, family history, past experiences and your lifestyle.  Your strengths and skills will be identified as well as any extra areas in which you might need support or training.  You will also discuss the number, ages and characteristics of the child or children you wish to care for and the type of fostering you can offer.

8. The social worker will complete a comprehensive report about you which you can read and comment on.

9. The report will then be submitted to the Warrington Fostering Panel who will recommend whether or not you should be approved as a foster carer.

10. Employers references will be sought if you have worked with children or vulnerable adults.

How long does it take?
It is difficult to put accurate time scales on how long it might take from start to finish as every family is different with it’s own unique circumstances.  However, from the time you return your application form we will aim to complete your assessment within six months, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
