Currently there are no academies or free schools in Warrington.
In 2011 the leaders of the three political parties of Warrington Borough Council released a statement that they were happy with the current stability and quality of local schools and would not be supportive of any school who expressed an interest in converting to academy status.
Culcheth High School have currently suspended their application for Academy status pending the resolution of a number of matters
Great Sankey High School is consulting with parents and staff on becoming an academy.
Woolston Free School
Plans for a free school in the Woolston area continue, however final approval for the project has not yet been given and a site for the school has not been identified.
Lysander High School's application to become an academy is not proceeding at the moment due to the recent outcome of their Ofsted inspection. Conversations are taking place with the school and the DfE regarding their longer term status.
Schools that do convert will be outside of local authority control and will receive funding directly from the government.
