The Gay and Lesbian Youth Support Service (GLYSS) is a project offering support to young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans (LGBT) or unsure of their sexuality. We can help with problems such as
- Sexuality, identity and coming out
- Family and relationship problems
- Homophobic bullying at school and work
- Sexual and mental health
- Meeting other LGBT young people and groups
The team
GLYSS is made up of a team of youth support workers, volunteers and peer workers who offer confidential one to one and group sessions which give young people the opportunity to talk to others who are in the same situation, offering comfort and support.
Activities and projects
GLYSS offers activities such as topical discussions, quizzes, arts, crafts, residentials, games, sports and meeting other LGBT groups. We take part in events such as Manchester and Warrington Pride, World Aids Day, LGBT history month and The Big Gay Read and we also have access to a library of LGBT books, magazines, DVD’s and videos.
Getting involved
Our sessions are usually held in a town centre location so that young people can visit us safely and be themselves. Young people can either text or phone Jane on the GLYSS mobile: 07747 473 829, or can send an email to glyss@hotmail.co.uk or add us to their messenger. We can then arrange to meet you, have a chat, explain the ground rules and introduce you to the group. Parents, carers, teachers, youth workers or friends can contact us on behalf of a young person if they prefer.
Support for parents and carers
GLYSS also offers support to parents and carers of young gay people. Professionals, organisations or agencies can also contact us for support and advice.
Working with other LGBT groups
GLYSS works with other LGBT groups in Warrington. We are members of LGBT youth north west and The Consortium.
