When someone is found guilty of an offence, an Order is made by the court which states what punishment that person must receive.
However, when young people first get into trouble, behave antisocially or commit a minor offence, they can be dealt with outside of the court system and the police or local authority can use a variety of pre-court sanctions. These include:
- Acceptable behaviour contracts
- Antisocial behaviour orders
- Local child curfews
- Child Safety Orders
- Reprimands for minor first time offences
Alternatively, if a young person has committed a second minor offence, the police can then use a final warning.
Each of these pre-court orders have been introduced to prevent young people from entering the Youth Justice System too early, whilst still offering them the help and support they need to stop offending.
