This financial assistance is discretionary and depends on whether the council has any money to fund these applications.
It is available to owner occupiers who have lived in their home for at least three years, who are vulnerable, living on a low income of £16,040 pa or less and/or receive a means tested benefit.
The types of work that may be considered include major structural repairs, dampness, dangerous electrics, major roof repairs, very old or lacking kitchen and bathroom facilities. Replacement doors, windows and guttering do not qualify on their own because they are maintenance items, but they can be included in the schedule if money is available. The maximum amount that can be approved is £25,000 or £35,000 if there is structural work required.
Renewals Assistance is not a grant, it is a type of equity release because the amount of money the council approves to do the work is placed as a charge against the property. So, if you sell the house afterwards, you have to pay back the council but it is interest free.
