We throw away 8.3 million tonnes of food every year. Of course some is peelings, cores and bones but most of it is, or once was, perfectly good food. Little by little all this waste really adds up. Over a month the average family throws away £50 of food shopping
Wasted food has a big impact on climate change. Most of it ends up in landfill sites where it rots and releases methane, a damaging greenhouse gas. The food we throw away is also a huge waste of energy, water and packaging used in its production, transport and storage.
