Reducing our carbon footprint

Our Carbon Footprint

As an authority we measure ourselves each year on two carbon footprints; our carbon footprint (which covers the items we manage through our carbon management plan) and the government-requested greenhouse gas report, which has a wider remit. These documents are similar but have key differences as they deal with emissions from varying sources.

 Carbon Management Plan Carbon Footprint

Our carbon management plan (see link below) sets us an ambitious target of reducing our carbon footprint by 40% by 2015.

Included in this footprint is:

  • electricity consumption from our buildings and street lighting
  • gas and oil consumption from our buildings
  • all staff business travel (by car, plane and train)
  • our fleet’s fuel consumption (petrol, diesel and oil)
  • water consumption from our buildings

Between 2009 / 2010 and 2010 / 2011 our carbon management plan carbon footprint has reduced by 6.5%*. We have seen reduced emissions in most areas. Some explanations for this reduction are:

  • our buildings electricity consumption has reduced from property rationalisation & greater energy awareness by building users.
  • fleet services have been undergoing an efficiency programme
  • investment into improving street lighting

This is great news as energy and fuel reduction means cost savings for the authority.

Carbon emissions

Government greenhouse gas report

We are required by the Department for Energy and Climate Change to produce an annual greenhouse gas report. This footprint includes the same data as above, with the additional inclusion of Warrington Borough Transport’s fleet emissions.

You can see the data and calculations for our greenhouse gas report in the document below.

With the addition of Warrington Borough Transport’s fleet emissions our footprint has reduced by 6.5% in the past year.

We have recently completed the energy savings trust 1 to 1 program and the completion report below shows the success we have had with the action plan created for us and highlights are we need to improve our work.
