What you can do to prepare for emergencies

We will try to give you as much information as possible if an emergency occurs in your area.  This will include:

  • Details of where the incident is and how it may affect you in terms of traffic problems, power supplies etc
  • Any implications for your health and welfare and access to helpline numbers
  • Advice and guidance about what you need to do and what we are doing to resolve the siutation

We will do this through one of the following methods:

  • Knocking on doors
  • From cars or a helicopter, by loudhailer
  • Announcements through the radio or TV
  • PA announcements in public buildings, shopping centres, sports venues, transport systems, etc.

The government is striving to make the UK as resilient as possible to be able to deal with emergency situations with the minimum disruption to our communities and business.

If you are involved in an emergency try to remain calm and dial 999 if anybody is in danger of being, or has been, injured. If you are not involved in an accident but believe you may be in danger, in most cases the advice is: Go in, stay in, tune in.

Below is a list of some of the things you can do to prepare:

  • Know how to turn off your water, gas and electricity
  • Understand the emergency procedures at your workplace and in your children's school
  • Know how to tune in to your local radio station
  • Have a list of useful telephone number and consider key items to take with you if you are evacuated
